If you're not an overly optimistic New York Giants fan, or Odell Beckham Jr, I probably don't have to tell you this: but the Giants are't going to win out and sneak into the playoffs at 9-7.
On paper, of course it's possible. The Giants have only lost two games this year by more than a touchdown, and their second half schedule isn't too menacing. And I can't knock Odell for believing this, it's the kind of motivation and drive that is rarely seen on a 2-7 squad.
But this team just can't do it.
Over the past two seasons, the Giants are 5-20. Only once in every five games have they been able to pull off a victory in this span. Even amid Beckham's injury, among others, last season, the Giants haven't had a horrible roster over these 25 games. Yet, time and time again , every time the team takes one step forward or seems to find some consistency on offense, it takes two steps back.
I do credit the defense for keeping the Giants in almost every game they've played this season. But it's frustrating that Eli Manning, Beckham, and Saquon Barkley can move the ball with ease one drive and then do absolutely nothing the next.
To round out the season, the Giants have the following opponents:
- Vs. Buccaneers (3-6)
- At Eagles (4-5)
- Vs. Bears (6-3)
- At Redskins (6-3)
- Vs. Titans (5-4)
- At Colts (4-5)
- Vs. Cowboys (4-5)
There's no team here that the Giants have no chance of beating. But again, why would a team that hasn't put together a win streak in two seasons suddenly be able to sustain an eight-game long one?
Assuming the Giants win any potential tiebreakers (which is unlikely with a 3-3 division record at best), the Redskins would have to go 3-4 or worse, and the Eagles and Cowboys would each have to go 5-2 or worse. A Giants loss to any of the three teams would certainly end their playoff aspirations.
I predict the Giants round out the season 4-11, winning two more games out of their final seven. This will likely land them a Top 5 NFL Draft Pick, but fans will have to suffer through a 2-5 stretch to end the season, which would bring the New York's two season total to 7-25.
Maybe they can regroup and contend for the playoffs next season.
