National Anthem Controversy Hurts NFL From Both Sides

No matter which side of the debate you fall on (including the "I don't care I just want to watch football" side), the spotlight of the sports world has been the National Anthem for the past week. A movement stemming originally from San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, highlighting police brutality and racial inequality, blew up in Week 3 following comments from President Donald Trump. The issue has been a source of great division for the NFL, its players, its fans, and even onlookers on social media. President Trump sparked this new wave of protest after comments both live and on Twitter. He referred to a player who kneels during the National Anthem as a "son of a bitch," adding owners should fire or release these players. This may have been plausible last week, as the movement was all but dead. But following Trump's comments, players were further compelled to kneel during the Star Spangled Banner to display their right of freedom of speech.

Giants Face Do-or-Die in Philadelphia

The New York Giants came into the season with high expectations. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul even commented "as long as we all work together, we'll be undefeated." But after two games, the Giants are 0-2, the fan base is torn on who to blame, and the offense can't sustain any success. Starting 0-2 is far from a death sentence. The Giants also lost their first two games in 2007, when they would go on to defeat the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. On the other hand, a slow start turned to an 0-6 death sentence for the 2013 Giants. But these 2017 Giants have talent, and a real chance at making noise in the playoffs this year. That is, if they can turn things around quickly. Offensively, Eli Manning has a slew of weapons in the recovering Odell Beckham Jr., the newly added Brandon Marshall, sophomore Sterling Shepard, rookie tight end Evan Engram, and versatile back Shane Vereen. On defense the team can be flat out scary at full strength. Janor

Mets Miss Opportunity Leaving Tebow in Minors

It's been almost exactly a year since former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. Most drafted rookies take a few years to work their way up to the majors. So why should it come as any surprise that a year later, Tebow is still in the minor league system? From a baseball perspective, it obviously doesn't come as a surprise. His numbers, while solid, hardly beg a September call-up. In his 126 combined games for Columbia and St. Lucie, Tebow is batting .226 with eight home runs and 52 RBI. Though the average is a little low, these are promising numbers for the former Broncos' first professional baseball season. But again, they aren't extraordinary, he wouldn't help the Mets on the field, and he could block the progress of other prospects if called up. What the Mets haven't taken into account, however, is the off-field incentives and opportunities that come with calling up Tebow. This September, the Mets are avera
